Spider-Man Web Shooter

3D Printed Prop

Project Info

As an exercise in product design and engineering, I decided to make a Spider-Man themed 3D printed water canon that was reverse engineered from a portable spray atomizer. Having been inspired by YouTube channel The Amazing Spider Dude and his video titled '10 Real Life Web-Shooters You Won't Believe', I wanted to make a functional prop that could blast a stream of water, simulating Spider-Man's web shooters.

Work Required

I first began by modeling the atomizer in Fusion 360 so that I could design the components accurately and to scale. The prop has a spring operated trigger, that when pulled, applies pressure to the bottle's own push button and releases the water. The 3D printed model was then fixed to a strap so that it could be mounted on the wrist.

Modelling in Fusion 360

Using the web shooter design from the movie 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' as a rough guide, I modeled the prop with function in mind and added small aesthetics to try to match the general theme. The reason I chose this atomizer was because it had a small pump built in.

3D printed parts

All the parts were 3D Printed in ABS, 100 micron layer height and glued together using epoxy. Each web shooter requires two 3mm x 20mm tension springs, two M2 x 20mm - one M2 x 10mm and one M3 X 20mm socket head screws.

Assembly

The web shooters were sprayed with grey filler primer and then coated in gloss black. I used a dry brushing technique to add some silver enamel acrylic to the edges to try and create a metallic, battle-damaged look. The wrist strap itself was purchased online and is made out of a polyurethane rubber with a hook & loop sewn in.

Project Info:

You can get the STL files from Thingiverse and I look forward to seeing your own 3D Printed Web Shooters. I'd very much like to work with other designers out there to collaborate on further projects.

Please take a moment to share my work and do get in touch as I'm always looking to meet similar minded people and spend long nights with coffee working creatively - Get In Touch.
