3D Design
Measuring the original figure, I rescaled a 3D body in Zbrush to the match the proportions. Using screen shots as a guide I modelled the hard surface parts in Blender which were then imported into Zbrush to add textures and final details.
Halloween is my favourite time of year and my most anticipated holiday. It's always a good excuse to dress up but there isn't always a time/place for a costume, so this year I'll be making up my old action figure as the main protagonist 'The Assassin' from Phil Tippett's outstanding film 'Mad God'. Really I just wanted to buy an existing toy replica of this character for my collection, but there doesn't seem to be one released at the time of writing this; therefore I'll just make my own! All the hard surface parts were designed in Zbrush and Blender, 3D Printed on my Elegoo Saturn, Primed/Painted and I added some 12" scale clothing items to finish off the final look.
Measuring the original figure, I rescaled a 3D body in Zbrush to the match the proportions. Using screen shots as a guide I modelled the hard surface parts in Blender which were then imported into Zbrush to add textures and final details.
All of the parts were 3D printed using either the Elegoo Saturn in grey, black and clear resin; some parts were printed on the Ender3. These were then cleaned up and primed in matt black spray paint.
Using a combination of what is known as 'Slapchop', which is a painting technique for miniatures that involves applying a base coat, drybrushing shades and highlights and good old traditional paint brush techniques; I added layers of colour in thin washes to build various material/metal effects with dirt and grime added.
It's safe to say I'm a fairly large Phil Tippett fan and have admired all of his works for many years, in fact longer than I was aware since he made most of the stop-motion effects from all my favorite movies as a kid and now adult. To my mind his work on 'Mad God' is a masterpiece and I've watched it too many times to admit now.
It's a nice feeling to still be inspired to make our own characters from these kinds of films, bringing them to life just like we did in our childhoods and I'm so glad I got to witness Phil's vision finally come to life to.
Thank you for taking the time to look through my work. Any questions give me a shout.
I'm always keen to work with other designers out there and collaborate on further projects. Please take a moment to share my project and do Get In Touch.
