They use 7x7 cable that passes through the 3D printed finger sockets making the profile of each pully very flush and comfortable for the performer.

I made these prototype extended creature fingers for a production some years back. They never made it to screen, but it was an effective mechanism nonetheless. Although they were designed for a single performer, the design was quick & easy and using a 3D scanner I could build a new set of fingers the same day using any performers hands as a basis.
